Notice Description

Historic England wishes to appoint a contractor to undertake the consolidation of and repairs to a number of monument features at Sondhill Castle, Herefordshire as set out in the statement of requirements. Snodhill is an eleventh century motte and bailey castle located on a steeply sloped, heavily wooded hill, known as the Golden Valley close to the Herefordshire villages of Dorstone and Peterchurch and the Welsh border. The hill site is roughly oval in plan surmounted by a level bailey with a motte at its east end on which the remains of the shell keep sit. At a lower level, the bailey is bounded to the north, south and east by a roughly level terrace. The upstanding remains of structures at Snodhill Castle have been identified by a section number (see below) this number has been included in the tender documents for each element and for clarity of the structures chosen for the proposed works. Seven separate upstanding ruinous sections survive comprising: Section 1 - Upstanding portion of north bastion. Section 2 - Section of north flanking wall Section 3 - Upstanding remains of a polygonal shaped shell keep to east side of the motte. Section 4 - Upstanding remains of fourteenth century gatehouse with circular tower Section 5 - Section of south flanking wall Section 6 - Portion of South bastion. Section 7 - Parts of the south curtain wall defence. Proposed repair work and consolidation works will be carried out to the following structures: Section 1, North Bastion - Removal of vegetation and root systems, consolidation of wall core and repointing and soft capping of wall head. Section 2, Low level wall segments of north side of keep - Removal of vegetation and root systems, consolidation of wall core and repointing and soft capping of wall head. C41 Section 3, Keep - Removal of vegetation, structural interventions to leaning wall, consolidation of wall core and repointing and soft capping of wall head. Section 4, Gatehouse - Removal of vegetation, consolidation of wall core and repointing and soft capping of wall head. Section 5, South flanking wall - Removal of vegetation, consolidation of wall core underpinning repointing and soft capping of wall head. Section 6, South flanking wall - Removal of vegetation, repointing and soft capping of wall head. This contract is concerned with the conservation of a number of the surviving remains of the castle fortifications. In addition to its special archaeological interest, the site is also of great environmental sensitivity and is home to a wide range of flora and fauna many of which enjoy statutory protection. The contractor will therefore be required to liaise with the archaeological and ecological clerks of work appointed by Historic England and to comply with their requirements..
