Summary of the contracting process

Natural England has awarded a contract for a trawling impact study titled "RDE680 - Isles of Scilly trawling impact study," aimed at assessing the ecological effects of re-opening a previously untouched area of sea east of the Isles of Scilly. The project falls under the category of research and development consultancy services and involves collecting additional video data, sediment samples, and infaunal analyses to complete a year-long study. The study period runs from 20th September 2024 to 31st March 2025, with the award having been published on 4th October 2024. The procurement process was conducted through a call-off from a framework agreement, and the total contract value is £49,325.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in marine ecological research and environmental impact assessments. SMEs and VCSEs are particularly well-suited to compete for such projects due to the selective procurement method. Engaging in this project allows businesses to establish or strengthen their partnership with Natural England and showcase their expertise in executing large-scale environmental studies. Companies with capabilities in video data collection, sediment analysis, and species documentation would find this contract especially aligned with their service offerings.

Notice Title

RDE680 - Isles of Scilly trawling impact study

Notice Description

An area of sea to the east of the Isles of Scilly has not been trawled for over 10 years and is set to be re-opened to trawling following a byelaw implementation in the next few months. This presents a unique opportunity to conduct a before and after study on the impacts of re-opening an area which has not experienced the degrading impacts of bottom towed gear for over a decade. So far in summer 2023 and early summer 2024, the research team led by Associate Professor Emma Sheehan at University of Plymouth alongside IOS and Cornwall IFCA conducted the before component of this study, collecting data of the habitats and biota using towed and baited video. This project is to complete the year one component of this project by facilitating the collection of additional video data, plus sediment and infaunal samples, as well as cover the cost of analysing the video data and writing up the end of year report.
