Summary of the contracting process

The UK Research & Innovation is inviting tenders for the procurement of offshore drilling services for a scientific project in New England Shelf Hydrogeology. The project, conducted by the British Geological Survey on behalf of the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling, aims to enhance understanding of fluid composition in continental shelf environments. The contract period is estimated to be between June and August 2024, with a tender period ending on November 29, 2023, and a contract value of £17,000,000.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses in the offshore drilling services sector to engage in a unique scientific project that explores groundwater flow and chemical fluxes in continental shelf systems. Companies with expertise in marine coring and vessel operation services are well-suited to compete for this contract. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are encouraged to participate, given the suitability preferences outlined by the buyer, UK Research & Innovation.

This scientific coring project seeks to extend our understanding of the current and past states of fluid composition, pressure, and temperature in continental shelf environments. In many coastal settings worldwide, the distribution of freshwater within continental shelf sediments is far out of equilibrium with modern sea level. One of the most remarkable examples is found on the Atlantic continental shelf off New England where groundwater within shallow Pliocene-Pleistocene sand aquifers over 100 km offshore has low salinity (3000 mg/l or less). This project will test several hypotheses to help constrain rates, directions, and mechanisms of groundwater flow and chemical fluxes in continental shelf systems.
