Summary of the contracting process

The Defra Network eTendering Portal is seeking suppliers for a project titled "Environmental and Societal impact of alternative fishing patterns and management," which falls under the industry category of marine research services. The procurement process is currently at the tender stage, with bids due by 15th August 2018. The project aims to develop a toolkit to assist policymakers in evaluating the environmental and societal impacts associated with different fishing management options in various geographical regions, including the United Kingdom and other overseas territories.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses that specialise in environmental consulting, marine research, and fisheries management. Companies with expertise in sustainable fishing practices, tool development for policy analysis, and those capable of facilitating stakeholder engagement are particularly well-suited to compete. The focus on creating a holistic approach to ecosystem-based fisheries management suggests that both small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and voluntary and community sector organisations (VCSEs) can play vital roles in this project.

Notice Title

Environmental and Societal impact of alternative fishing patterns and management

Notice Description

This project aims to procure a supplier for the development of a toolkit with a suite of functions which will allow policy makers to assess the environmental and societal impacts and trade-offs of different management options associated with how fishing opportunities are allocated and managed between inshore and offshore fleets. This project will look at vessels, gear, environmental interactions and societal costs to help inform managers how additional fishing opportunities could be allocated in a way which rewards and incentivises fishing practices which minimise environmental impacts, benefits society and considers the effect of displacement as a result of decision making. Our vision is to contribute to a more holistic approach to ecosystem based fisheries management that takes into account the different sections of the English fleet and ensures they are managed in an effective manner that encourages the use of environmentally friendly techniques. We want to develop a world class fisheries management system, which supports sustainable fisheries and a productive fishing industry post EU Exit.
