Notice Title
SCC LP Statutory Administration and Professional Advice relating to School Governance
Notice Description
School governors are one of the largest volunteer forces in the country and it is recognised that they play an important part in raising school standards by ensuring schools provide good quality, effective education. Individual governors are members of a governing board which is established in law as a corporate decision making body. The board of governors of a school provides non-executive leadership and its purpose is to provide confident, strategic leadership and to create robust accountability, oversight and assurance for educational and financial performance and safeguarding arrangements. The key roles of a governing body are to set the strategic direction for the school, monitor the schools' academic progress and ensure public accountability for the whole spectrum of activity associated with the school. There currently are over 5600 governor posts in Surrey's maintained schools, and over 380 schools and academies across the county. All governing bodies of maintained schools are required to be constituted under the School Governance (Constitution) (England) Regulations 2012 or the School Governance (Federations) (England) Regulations 2012 and Local Authorities have a range of statutory duties to support good governance in schools. These include maintaining an accurate school governor database, overseeing the process for making and reviewing Instruments of Government in Maintained schools; supporting the process for LA governor nominations and ensuring the provision of general advice, guidance and support that is free of charge to individual governors.
