Notice Description

The Environment Agency is developing a large programme of Natural Flood Management (NFM) measures across the River Aire Catchment as part of the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme, Phase 2, Project. The planned NFM programme is transformational in scale. It will provide a minimum reduction of 5% off the flood peak in Leeds through a variety of measures which include: - Woodland creation: increasing tree canopy across the catchment; - Land management: run off reduction via various means, including in urban areas, and - River and flood plain restoration: storage ponds and re-meandering, amongst others. The project is currently in the development phase, and delivery is anticipated to commence in earnest in Autumn 2019 and to continue through to 2024. The scale of woodland creation required to achieve the flood risk benefit is significant; it is anticipated that the number of trees required of circa 4 million.
