Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process for the "ERA-NET OPTIBERRY" project is being conducted by the Defra Network eTendering Portal, located in London, England. This tender falls under the research and development services category and the procurement method employed is selective, involving a call-off from a framework agreement. The contract is currently awarded and the award notice was published on 27th October 2020. The contract period is set to start on 1st April 2020 and run until 31st March 2022, with a total contract value of £96,524. The tender period concluded on 11th March 2020.

This tender presents significant opportunities for growth, particularly for businesses specialising in research services, biorefinery, and food technology innovations related to berry processing. Businesses that focus on sustainable practices and have experience in collaborative projects, especially within the Horizon 2020 programme, would be well-suited to engage in such procurement activities. Given the focus on utilising non-premium fruit and enhancing its value, entities that can offer innovative solutions related to biomass and food ingredient development may find themselves ideally positioned for participation in future tenders linked to this project.

Notice Title

ERA-NET OPTIBERRY

Notice Description

This commission is to award a contract with the UK research partner who have been approved at EU level to deliver research services in respect of the collaborative project OPTIBERRY under the ERA-NET scheme, which is part of Horizon 2020 - the European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (2014-2020). OPTIBERRY targets mild processing and biorefinery/extraction concepts to food and non-food prototypes and (non)-food ingredients for sustainable use of berry biomass available, in particular the non-premium fruit. Berries were chosen for their economic importance and local and regionally clustered availability. In Europe almost 2 million tons of berries are grown. However, more than 15% of these berries do not enter the fresh market because of retailer-driven quality reasons, corresponding with more than 300 000 tons of non-premium fruit. Part of these non-premium fruit finds a destination in the industry but are sold at "dumping" prices (0.3-0.6 EUR/kg vs picking cost of 4.5 EUR/kg).
