Summary of the contracting process

The University of Birmingham is conducting a procurement process titled "Facilities Management for High Temperature Centre," aimed at sourcing services for the newly established High Temperature Research Centre (HTRC) within the Ansty Research Park in Coventry. This project, in collaboration with Rolls-Royce, falls under the industry category of "Sewage, refuse, cleaning and environmental services." The procurement method utilised is a direct award, with the tender having closed on 31 March 2015. The awarded contract, valued at £1,150,000, commenced on 4 December 2015 and is set to conclude on 31 January 2018.

This procurement presents significant opportunities for businesses that specialise in facilities management services, particularly those with expertise in managing complex environments and specialist operations. Given the nature of the project and its ties with Rolls-Royce, companies with capabilities in environmental services or those experienced in similar collaborative university programmes are well-positioned to compete. Engaging in this contract could help expand service providers' portfolios and establish relationships with major industrial partners in the region.

Notice Title

Facilities Management for High Temperature Centre

Notice Description

The University is opening a High Temperature Research Centre (HTRC) on the Ansty Research Park in Coventry. The HTRC is a collaborative project with a major partner, Rolls Royce. The HTRC is adjacent to the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in which the University and Rolls Royce already have a stake. It was initially envisaged that the Facilities Management (FM) Services could be provided by the University's existing service providers. As the project has developed it has become apparent that the services cannot be provided by the existing providers due to the specialist nature of the HTRC operations, distance from the University and the large number of different providers that would be required to service the HTRC. A contract needs to be put in place beginning of March 2015 in time for the opening of the HTRC in April 2015. The University and Rolls-Royce have analysed the service requirements for the HTRC. An options appraisal has concluded that a contract for Facilities Management with Mitie, MTC's current FM provider, would offer the best option.
