Summary of the contracting process

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority is currently conducting a tender for the project titled "STEP WP9 Task 1 - Waste Disposal and Decommissioning Optioneering REBID." This initiative, classified under engineering services, aims to explore effective processing, disposal, and recycling solutions for waste generated during the operation of a nuclear device. The tender period is open until 13th September 2019, and the contract will begin on 4th October 2019, lasting until 31st March 2020. Interested parties should note that the procurement method is an open procedure, with a contract value set at £75,000 and opportunities for engagement available across various regions, including the United Kingdom and British Overseas Territories.

This tender represents a significant opportunity for businesses specialised in engineering services, particularly those focusing on environmental management, waste processing, and nuclear decommissioning strategies. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are particularly encouraged to participate, leveraging their innovative capabilities in waste reduction and recycling technologies. Firms with expertise in research and development related to hazardous waste should also consider this tender, as successful bids may lead to further collaboration with the UKAEA in advancing nuclear waste solutions and technologies.

Notice Title

STEP WP9 Task 1 - Waste Disposal and Decommissioning Optioneering REBID

Notice Description

UKAEA wishes to initiate a contract to explore the processing, disposal and recycling solutions for waste materials that are likely to be generated during the nuclear operation of a STEP device. This will build upon the research-based waste assessment studies already performed by UKAEA as part of EUROfusion demonstration fusion power plant ('DEMO') studies but with a more engineering and technological focus. The project is aimed at guiding future STEP R&D, for example to indicate if the current "low-activation" constraints can be relaxed or if further mitigation steps are required in the design of STEP. The decommissioning plans for STEP should become part of the design phase and this contract will aim to deliver a prototype plan for a fusion device.
