Notice Title

GB-London: Guidance on the Councillor Code of Conduct

Notice Description

The LGA has undergone extensive consultation with the sector to revise and renew the LGA's Model Councillor Code of Conduct (2020). A key finding from the consultation was the need for further guidance and explanation about key aspects of the code and conduct in general. Whilst we have sought to keep the Model Councillor Code of Conduct as short and direct as possible, it is clear that supporting information and guidance would be very welcomed. It was a fundamental aim of the revised code that it should be from the councillor's perspective and tool to support councillors in achieving and maintaining high standards of conduct. The LGA also had the objective that the code should form the basis of a 'social contract' with the general public, to address issues of public intimidation against councillors. More information on this is set out in our Civility in Public Life programme, of which the revision of the code is one component. The code itself is due to be formally signed off by the LGA on 3 December 2020.
