Summary of the contracting process

The NHS Arden and Greater East Midlands Commissioning Support Unit has awarded a contract for the provision of a national service for open pre-natal surgery to treat fetuses with open spina bifida. The contract, valued at £2,068,689 GBP, was awarded to UZ Leuven and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The contract duration is expected to be 3 years, with an option to extend for an additional 2 years. The procurement stage was an open tender, and the closing date for submission of the completed questionnaire was 12pm midday on Thursday 16th February 2023.

This procurement process presents opportunities for specialised healthcare providers with expertise in fetal medicine and paediatric neurosurgery. Businesses that have experience in open fetal surgery for fetuses with open spina bifida, as well as a multidisciplinary team in place to deliver the service, would be well-suited to compete. The location of the service provision is in the United Kingdom, and the industry category is classified as health services under the CPV code 85100000. Interested providers were encouraged to engage in a market engagement questionnaire to inform the commissioning approach, potentially leading to a simpler provider selection process without a formal tender process.
