Summary of the contracting process

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is currently inviting tenders for the project titled "STEP Plasma Modelling," which focuses on advancing fusion power through the development of the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP). This procurement, classified under the industry category of research and development services, is at the Tender stage and will remain open until 24 April 2019. The contract will commence on 25 April 2019 and is expected to last until 31 March 2024, with a total anticipated value of up to £1.5 million. The procurement method employed is an open procedure, welcoming expressions of interest from relevant suppliers across Great Britain and beyond.

This tender presents opportunities for businesses specialising in research and simulation technologies related to plasma dynamics, especially those with capabilities in gyrokinetic simulations and related areas. Companies capable of delivering innovative solutions for non-inductive plasma start-up methods and turbulence modelling are well-suited to compete for this contract. Furthermore, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are encouraged to participate, making this an ideal opportunity for research organisations eager to contribute to the cutting-edge field of fusion energy development.

Notice Title

STEP Plasma Modelling

Notice Description

The UKAEA aims to establish a national programme that will explore the options, challenges and solutions for accelerating the delivery of fusion power through the development of a compact reactor, the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP). The programme will cover every aspect of designing a fusion reactor, including plasma performance and plasma control for steady-state operation. UKAEA invites expressions of interest from research organisations capable of carrying out plasma modelling for STEP. Specifically, modelling is required in the following areas: * First principles-based (gyrokinetic) simulations of turbulence and the associated plasma turbulence in the plasma core and pedestal. * Simulations of turbulence in the scrape-off layer (SOL). * Simulations of non-inductive plasma start-up and non-inductive current drive using waves in the electron cyclotron range of frequencies. The framework will have an initial duration of 1 year, extendable on an annual basis for a maximum of 5 years in aggregate
