Notice Title

Enhanced Level Practice Allied Health Professions (AHPs)

Notice Description

The Long Term Plan (LTP), the AHP strategy for England - AHPs Deliver , and future workforce strategies point to the need for improved career pathways for staff with associated funding for education and training. This will optimise the potential of the workforce ensuring the professions continually develop and update the skills they need to deliver their full scope of practice across the length of their career. As a critical element of the education and training reform agenda this will also help to retain our valued staff, many of whom leave in their early to mid-stage careers at a significant loss to health and social care providers. Enhanced practice education is seen as a key part of this pathway for each profession. The enhanced clinical practitioner apprenticeship was approved for delivery in May 2021 and provides a formal educational pathway for clinical staff in their early to mid-careers. It is envisioned to become the accepted route to train, creating an education pathway to optimise upskilling of clinical skills and practice. It will be targeted at experienced clinicians (established Band 6s for example), occupying a space following qualification and preceptorship, whilst preceding advanced practice in terms of the clinical management of complexity and uncertainty across health and social care. The majority of the professional workforce operates at the enhanced level practice. Enhanced level practice can be the precursor to advanced level practice, or it can be a valued workplace destination also in its own right. Clinicians working at an enhanced level of practice have many job titles and roles across many different professions within health and social care environments. They usually work as part of a multidisciplinary team and apply their skills, education, and experience to substantially contribute to episodes of care. Although they work across different settings or spheres of practice, they will often have a focused skillset and depth of knowledge related to their individual sphere of practice where it intersects with professional knowledge related to the job roles their employers require. They tend to have undertaken post registration education relevant to their profession, area of practice and role.
