Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process is being conducted by the Defra Network eTendering Portal, focusing on the acquisition of an Automated Surface Vehicle (ASV) for a multibeam bathymetric survey within the Greater Sizewell Bay, East of England. This tender, identified as CEFAS21-69, is currently in the Tender stage and is set to close on 14th June 2021. The contract period will commence on 1st July 2021 and conclude on 30th September 2021, with an estimated value of £17,000 for the service. The procurement follows an open method under the open procedure (below threshold) category, specifically targeting services related to survey vessels and bathymetric survey services.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in marine and survey technologies, particularly those adept at providing automated surface vehicle solutions. Companies with experience in carrying out environmental surveys and those skilled in innovative survey methodologies will find this contract well-suited to their capabilities. Engaging in this project could not only enhance a supplier’s profile but also pave the way for future contracts, especially as Cefas considers additional surveys related to ongoing construction needs for the Sizewell C project.

Notice Title

CEFAS21-69 BEEMS RFQ - Automated Surface Vehicle (ASV) multibeam bathymetric sur

Notice Description

Cefas require an automated surface vehicle (ASV) to undertake a shallow water multibeam bathymetric survey with 100% coverage of the area of interest (AOI) to IHO Order 1A (at a minimum) within the Greater Sizewell Bay (GSB) (Figure 1). The reason for using an ASV is two fold: 1. Maximise the western extent of the survey area: Two longshore bars exist in shallow waters within the AOI (important geomorphological features), with the inner bar being subaerial during some low tide periods. Accordingly, there is a high priority for the furthest landward coverage possible to be achieved by the survey, so that bathymetric data can be meshed to aerial topographic surveys of the beach, typically undertaken at low tide. We therefore require a shallow draft vessel capable of operating as close to the land sea boundary as possible, in order to maximise survey coverage of these important geomorphological features; and 2. Demonstration of the use of ASV survey methods: This survey will provide Cefas with a case study to assess the feasibility of using ASVs for future survey work. If demonstrated to be successful, additional surveys may be required pre and during the proposed SZC construction phase. These will be to monitor morphological changes in the longshore bars and to assess safe navigation and associated dredging requirements of the berthing pocket associated with the proposed beach landing facility (BLF) (a piled jetty structure used for landing construction materials).
