Summary of the contracting process

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority is currently engaged in an open procurement process titled "Metal Melting/Casting Test Rig," aimed at acquiring a metal melting furnace designed for experimental research. The procurement falls under the goods category, specifically targeting the classification of "Smelting furnaces" (CPV code: 42330000). This tender is taking place at the UKAEA Culham site, located in Abingdon, United Kingdom. The tender period is set to close on 24 May 2021, with the contract expected to commence on 11 June 2021, lasting until 15 January 2022. An amendment has been made to extend the submission deadline in response to bidder feedback.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in equipment design and manufacturing, particularly those with expertise in handling high-temperature and radiologically controlled materials. Companies offering engineering services related to mechanical design, as well as those involved in research and development of industrial equipment for experimental purposes, would be well-positioned to compete for this contract. With a budget of £400,000, this project aims to enhance the technological capabilities of metal melting processes, thereby fostering innovation in the industry.

Notice Title

Metal Melting/Casting Test Rig

Notice Description

The design, build, and commission of a metal melting furnace for the use of experimental testing and research. Aims of the research are to test metal melting, separation, volume reduction, and radiological contamination and the furnace purchased should allow such investigations to occur, while also aiding in the advancement of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) of the process. The metal melting furnace should be able to heat to a temperature of 1,750degC. The rig (for purposes here called 'Rig 1') should have a capacity of 200 - 500 milliliters melt volume with a footprint of less than 3m x 3m x 3m and able to handle radioactive materials with a tritium content <1MBq/g and other beta/gamma <12KBq/g. This rig would be housed in a radiologically controlled area on-site at UKAEA Culham
