Summary of the contracting process

The UK Research & Innovation is initiating a planned procurement process for the "UKRI-1679 Remote Retrieval and Handling Facility", categorized under the goods industry, specifically for containers for waste material. The procurement, valued at £10 million, is part of the Waste Accumulation Reduction Programme (WARP) aimed at managing radioactive waste at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in South West England. The main procurement methods involve designing, manufacturing, and commissioning a hot cell facility, which is targeted for completion on or after the future notice date of March 31, 2022.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in the design and construction of hazardous waste management facilities, particularly those with expertise in handling radioactive materials. Companies engaged in engineering, construction, and installation for similar environments are well-suited to compete. As the project requires a turnkey contract, potential bidders should demonstrate their capability in managing complex installations that comply with strict safety and regulatory standards, thus fostering growth in the sector as they respond to emerging demands in waste management services.

Notice Title

UKRI-1679 Remote Retrieval and Handling Facility

Notice Description

Design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of a hot cell facility. The Remote Retrieval and Handling Facility (RRHF) project is part of the Waste Accumulation Reduction Programme (WARP) which is in place to manage the accumulation of radioactive waste from legacy facilities and current ISIS operations at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL). This radioactive waste needs to be safely managed and disposed of in compliance with legislation and government policy.

Lot Information

Lot 1

The RRHF will be a specialist hot cell facility that will allow handling of radioactive waste, primarily in preparation for disposal, but also facilitating sampling, size reduction, Post Irradiation Examination (PIE), maintenance and other tasks involving radioactive materials. It is anticipated that the facility will consist of two shielded cells; a de-lidding cell for loading and unloading shielded flasks, and an active cell for 'invasive works'. Each cell will be served with through-wall-manipulators and overhead cranes. The shielding thickness requirement will be approximately 350mm of steel, or equivalent, with a total steel mass of approximately 600 tonnes. The facility will be constructed within an existing radiation supervised area and procured under a single turnkey contract.
