Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process initiated by Essex County Council is for a tender titled "Temporary Storage Facility for Coroner Services," which falls under the funeral and related services industry. The tender aims to address the need for additional death management services in Essex, particularly in response to the pressures from Covid-19. The procurement is currently at the tender stage, with a bid opening scheduled for 25th October 2021, and the submission deadline set for the same day at 12:00 PM. The selected supplier will be responsible for providing approximately 100 new storage spaces, with the potential to scale up to 300 spaces, located centrally within Essex, accessible within 72 hours' notice.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses within the funeral services and related sectors, especially those equipped to expand their storage capabilities rapidly. Companies that offer transportation services and have the infrastructure to provide 24/7 access to their facilities would be particularly well-suited to bid. Engaging in this procurement could enhance service offerings and contribute to the management of excess death scenarios, ultimately fostering business growth in a critical and high-demand area.

Notice Title

Temporary Storage Facility for Coroner Services

Notice Description

It is expected that over the next three years the death management system, which already experiences winter pressures from flu and other pressures, will be heightened due to Covid-19 as we learn to live with the variants and the knock-on effect from closing services down to stop the spread that was experienced in the first and second wave. ECC would like to put a contract in place that can be used at short notice to add additional storage to the system at times of Excess Death. The contract will be to add close to 100 new spaces (90 - 110 would be acceptable) to the system.

Lot Information

Lot 1

The supplier will be expected to offer a transport operation to support the storage solution. Access to the site must be possible 24/7 although it is expected the site would be used mainly during normal business hours. Once cleared by the coroner, the supplier will be expected to arrange for collection of any deceased to the care of the family's appointed Funeral Director except for public funerals.
