Summary of the contracting process

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is initiating a tender for the "Detritiation Furnace Concept Design" as part of their plans to construct a new thermal detritiation facility at the Culham Science Centre in Abingdon, UK. This procurement is classified under the goods category focused on industrial or laboratory furnaces, incinerators, and ovens, with a deadline for future notice set for 31 March 2023. The current stage of this procurement is in the planning phase, reflecting the exploration of technologies to reduce Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) sent for long-term storage.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in thermal processing equipment and related technologies. Companies with expertise in commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) furnace manufacturing, delivery, and installation are particularly well-positioned to participate. The UKAEA is looking to understand the supply chain capabilities and affordability of such technologies, which opens the door for innovative solutions and partnerships in the energy sector. This project not only offers potential contracts but also contributes to advancements in waste management technologies, essential for the UK's nuclear industry.

Notice Title

Detritiation Furnace Concept Design

Notice Description

The UKAEA is currently exploring the possibility of constructing a new thermal detritiation facility based upon existing technology used in the Materials Detritiation Facility (MDF) at the Culham Science Center. These investigations are sought to identify opportunities to reduce the amount of Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) which is sent for long term storage in a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF). The new thermal detritiation facility would be capable of accepting larger items for detritiation, be designed for a higher throughput, be loaded and operated remotely and have more flexible operating limits (including temperature and air flow) to cope with expected future demands. Ideally, the furnace at the heart of the thermal detritiation facility will be Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) equipment, or COTS with minor modification.

The desired outcome of this Prior Information Notice is for the UKAEA to understand the limits and opportunities available with COTS furnaces across the supply chain. This is intended to ensure that the thermal detritiation facility concept design is both achievable and affordable.
