Summary of the contracting process

The public procurement process involves FIRST TRENITALIA WEST COAST RAIL LIMITED, which is currently seeking to acquire 431 catering carts, specifically 2/3rd Atlas carts, through a selective procurement method. This tender is actively in the negotiation stage and is set to conclude on 15 April 2022. The procurement falls under the goods category, with the classification of 'Trolleys' (CPV Code: 34911100). The delivery of these carts will be required within the UK, and there may be a potential contract extension of an additional 24 months based on future needs.

This tender presents significant growth opportunities for businesses engaged in manufacturing or supplying catering carts or similar products. Companies specialising in custom cart designs, capable of meeting the specified dimensions and features—such as weight constraints, durability for rough terrain, and ease of cleaning—would be particularly well-suited to participate. With an emphasis on quality and functionality, businesses that can demonstrate expertise in the production or supply of these carts may find a competitive advantage in this procurement process.

Notice Title

Purchase of catering carts

Notice Description

AWC require to purchase 431 2/3rd Atlas carts of the following dimensions: a) Dimensions * Overall (L x B x H): 540 x 328 x 1030mm * Top Recess: 39mm There should be a means to restrain a drawer/slop bucket on the top of the cart, by way of handrails or similar (see picture for current) b) Weight Whilst rail does not have the same weight limitation of airlines, we expect that an empty cart weighs no more than: * Empty: 18.6kg * Capacity: 61.4kg * Max gross weight: 80kg c) The following are key features that are required: i. Two doors, you will need to state if the doors are left or right side hinged ii. Door should be able to be fully opened, flat against side of cart, and be held there by magnet. iii. Two way, four-pedal foot operated brake system, iv. Powder coated doors of one colour. Tenderers will need to state if there are colour options v. Three point turn lock, sealable by cable tie or similar vi. At least 8 Internal runners as shown in Figure 1: Service Carts, spaced circa 7.2 mm apart, as shown in Figure 1: Service Carts. We believe these are based on normal Atlas runners, but in any event, they should support wire baskets and drawers, as shown in Figure 3: White Drawers and Figure 4: Wire Baskets (Review specification document) vii. 1 internal Shelf, mid height in place of a runner, or an alternative way to give strength/support to the cart. Current approach shown in Figure 1: Service Carts. We want the positioning of any internal shelf to maximise the space available, so that there is minimal space loss due to the drawers and basket positioning, as per Figure 2, avoiding wasted space.. viii. External bumpers along the length of the cart (but not impeding door fully opening) ix. Corner protectors on the 4 top corners (these can be fitted post delivery, but tenderers will need to state if these are or are not included.) x. Cart top should be durable, flat and easily wipeable. xi. All internal surfaces should be smooth, and easily cleanable for hygiene purposes (no hidden nooks, ledges etc) d) We do not require the carts to have temperature insulation. e) Our current fleet is fitted with 100mm Steinco as shown in Figure 1: Service Carts. We expect our new carts will have similar size and design, and the castors will require to traverse some rough terrain, such as rumble strips on platforms, or tarmacked areas. Therefore, they do need to be durable. f) Each cart will require to be uniquely identified through an aluminium asset tag riveted to the cart, and has the next due maintenance date on another riveted tag. Tenderers will need to state whether the carts come with, or without these already in place. We would also prefer our new carts to have a different colour to our current fleet, in order to aid identification of the two types. g) Please note that we require 431 carts, but believe this may not fully load all containers. We will therefore also request a priced option to avoid any part filled containers.
