South Tyneside Council is part of a regional bid - with the local authorities of Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland and Sunderland - to secure funding through the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT's) PS40m fund for 5G Innovation Regions (5GIRs). The focus of the competition is to "drive innovation and unlock opportunities for economic growth through making use of world-class digital infrastructure." DSIT encouraged applicants to focus on two or three key sectors that play to local strengths and demonstrate how better digital connectivity could help to drive growth.South Tyneside Council are leading on the procurement for a 5G Smart Port Partner which will conduct trials to 5G enabled port operations to improve port competitiveness and reduce environmental impact.
