Summary of the contracting process

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority has awarded a contract for the HyDUS Fuel Cell project to EH Group Engineering AG. The project involves the purchase of a fuel cell to convert gaseous hydrogen into electricity at the Culham Science Centre in Abingdon, UK. The procurement method used was a limited award procedure without prior publication of a call for competition, aiming to fulfil technical requirements related to G99 certification and space constraints.

This tender provides an opportunity for businesses involved in fuel cells or energy storage to participate. Suitable businesses would need to meet the technical specifications required for G99 certification and comply with the space allocation of 2.5M x 2.5M as stipulated in the planning application. The successful supplier, EH Group Engineering AG, is a large-scale engineering company based in Nyon, Switzerland, demonstrating potential for international collaboration in similar projects.

Procurement Information

The technical reasons to pursue this JNCA comprise of two, these are a follows: 1. Requirement of a G99 approved export facility - The G99 is the regulation surrounding the connection of any form of generator device to run 'in parallel' or 'synchronised' with the mains electrical utility grid (National Grid). Any facility installed would need to be approved and certified before connection. The JNCA proposed facility has such a certification to allow for connection, therefore, enabling the demonstrator to fulfil the project objectives. 2. Requirement for the facility to fit within the space allocation of 2.5M X 2.5M as prescribed by the planning application - The JNCA proposed facility can satisfy the installation space constraints, therefore complying with the legal stipulations of the determination. For the avoidance of doubt this was the only supplier that could meet the space allocation stipulation.
