Summary of the contracting process

UK Biobank, a large-scale biomedical database and research charity in the UK, has awarded a contract for the supply of liquid nitrogen to Air Products Plc. This contract, valued at approximately £911,210, will cover liquid nitrogen needs from 28 June 2024 onward at the UK Biobank's site in Cheadle, Stockport. The procurement process was conducted using an open procedure under the regulations set forth by the CELEX standard 32014L0024. The contract will span an initial 12-month period, with the possibility of extension up to three years. Notably, UK Biobank requires liquid nitrogen of a minimum purity grade of 99% to be delivered, maintaining the tanks and telemetry equipment, with indicative volumes ranging up to 5,000 metric tonnes annually.

This tender presents significant opportunities for suppliers specializing in high-purity liquid nitrogen and related services. Air Products Plc has the chance to strengthen its market presence within the UK life sciences sector, leveraging a reliable and substantial client like UK Biobank. Businesses that excel in the timely, quality-assured supply and maintenance of liquid nitrogen and associated equipment would be well-suited to such procurement opportunities, enabling them to establish strong relationships and secure long-term contracts with research institutions. With criteria placing emphasis on supply assurance, environmental policies, and pricing, suppliers meeting these specifications could greatly benefit from participating in future tenders of this nature.
