Summary of the contracting process

Birmingham City Council has awarded a contract for the provision of dog kennel services under the title "Provision of Dog Kennel Services." This procurement falls under the services category (CPV code 98380000) and is focused on the stray dog kennelling and rehoming industry. This initiative aids the Council in fulfilling its statutory responsibility to collect and impound stray dogs. The awarded contract will be carried out by Bromsgrove District Council and is valued at £481,550. The contract is set to commence on 20th September 2024 and will last for two years, unless terminated under the terms and conditions of the contract. The procurement method used was an open procedure, and the award decision was influenced by criteria emphasising quality, social value, and price.

This contract presents significant business growth opportunities for suppliers in the animal care and veterinary services sectors. Businesses capable of providing comprehensive kennel services, including boarding for dogs of unknown vaccination status, immediate veterinary treatment, and rehoming services or humane euthanasia for unclaimed dogs, would be well-suited to compete. The contract involves handling up to 1,000 stray dogs annually, which offers a stable and extensive workload. Organisations looking to expand or establish themselves within the UK's public service contracts, particularly in the West Midlands area, would find this an ideal opportunity. The competitive nature of the procurement also highlights the importance of demonstrating high standards in quality and social value as part of the bid.
