Summary of the contracting process

The National Grid Electricity System Operator (NGESO), operating under the National Grid Group, has released a Prior Information Notice (PIN) regarding the procurement of a European Wholesale Energy Data Platform. The procurement process is currently in the planning stage with a future notice date set for 30 April 2025. The platform aims to facilitate access to extensive market data about both European and GB wholesale energy markets, with capabilities including API access and a user-friendly online interface. NGESO, transitioning to National Energy System Operator (NESO) by Summer 2024, requires the data platform to support various analytics teams. The total contract value is estimated at GBP 680,000, with a three-year duration and options to extend annually for up to five years, contingent upon compliance with the Utilities Contracts Regulations 2016. All prospective suppliers must be registered with Achilles UVDB to participate in the pre-qualification stage, commencing in April 2024.

This procurement presents a promising business growth opportunity for companies specialising in software packages and information systems, particularly those with robust energy trading systems. Ideal candidates are businesses capable of providing high availability platforms (95% uptime or more), comprehensive data accuracy and documentation, and the ability to manage unlimited API requests. Given the emphasis on ease of use and flexibility, firms that can offer scalable, agile contracts and trial periods for user testing during the Request for Proposal (RFP) process will be well-positioned. Additionally, this project offers a strategic foothold in the energy sector, catering to evolving demands from the UK Government-owned NESO post-separation from the National Grid Group.
