Summary of the contracting process

Bangor University procured construction and refurbishment works for the Albert Gubay Business School in Bangor. The project converts the former Friars Junior School on Ffriddoedd Road into a business school, combining refurbishment of the historic building with a purpose-built extension. Bangor University may award additional work if funding becomes available.

This award shows demand at Bangor University for a contractor able to refurbish a historic building and deliver a purpose-built extension as one coordinated construction project. A credible competitor for a similar requirement would need to evidence delivery of comparable building projects, including pre-construction planning, programme control and management of construction on an active site. The evaluation placed substantial emphasis on cost and value engineering, alongside a capable project team and supply chain, risk controls, health and safety, stakeholder engagement and management of defects and handover. Suppliers would also need to demonstrate sound financial, corporate and professional standing, suitable subcontractors, and a track record of delivering social value and community benefits. The process was suitable for SMEs, but required capacity to manage a complex, multi-stage construction contract and provide clear technical and commercial submissions.

Bangor University has received a donation from the Albert Gubay Charitable Foundation to create a state-of-the-art business school, which will be housed in the soon-to-be converted site of the former Friars Junior School on Ffriddoedd Road in Bangor. The refurbishment and development of this historic building and site will offer a really exciting opportunity to create a sector-leading business school, whilst conserving and renewing a significant, historic building in Bangor. The project aims to focus on refurbishing the historic asset, whilst extending to include a purpose-built vibrant Business School, to enhance the visitor, student and staff experience, and in turn entice future students and staff to the University. The University has now signed the contract for delivery and is subsequently issuing a Contract Details Notice.
