Summary of the contracting process

Dorset Council has recently concluded an open tender process to secure a supplier to manage Household Recycling Centres, Waste Transfer Stations, and associated services across Dorset. The procurement falls under the services category with a focus on refuse and waste-related services. The awarded contract commences on 28 August 2026 and spans an initial duration of eight years, featuring potential extensions reaching up to 12 years in total. The industry category pertains to waste management, and the contract value is projected to reach up to £156 million gross. This tender process observed various stages including planning, tender, and award, with the Dorset Council playing a central role as the buying organisation. Located in Dorchester, Dorset Council has engaged W&S Waste Management Ltd as the supplier, underscoring a robust partnership for the project's execution.

The procurement opportunity signals significant growth potential for businesses involved in waste management services, particularly those focusing on hauling, treating residual waste, and marketing recyclates. It notably caters to organisations capable of handling expansive logistics and waste processing tasks. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with established abilities in waste services and infrastructure could benefit from participating in similar tender opportunities as seen in Dorset. Given the long-term nature of the contract, businesses positioning themselves strategically can secure stable revenue streams and contribute to sustainable environmental practices in the locality. The open procedure method adopted by Dorset Council ensures transparency and fairness, inviting capable entities to leverage their expertise in waste management while potentially accessing further procurement opportunities as outlined by the contracting authority.
