Summary of the contracting process

Nuclear Waste Services Limited is procuring specialist environmental safety case services through its Waste Services business. The work will provide suitably qualified technical people to support the Environmental Safety Case team, including general technical, geological and hydrogeological support and peer review-related activities. An Environmental Safety Case brings together reports, scientific evidence and structured arguments about the environmental safety of disposing of solid radioactive waste. The services will support the Low Level Waste Repository’s regulatory obligations, continued disposal into future vaults, and eventual closure and capping. Notice Description

Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), the Client, through its Waste Services line of business, is procuring an open framework for Environmental Safety Case. The Client requires specialist technical services to support the application of and further development of its ESC. This involves the provision of suitably qualified people to support the delivery of scoped packages of work to support NWS' ESC team in fulfilling its obligations as set out by the regulator and undertaking the forward work programme. The scope of work under this framework involves the provision of support to the ESC team in undertaking the technical activities identified below. Emerging requirements may be identified, noting that integrating tools and techniques of the LLWR and the GDF ESC Safety Cases will be an objective for NWS in the coming years. An Environmental Safety Case (ESC) is a comprehensive set of reports concerning the environmental safety of the disposal of solid radioactive waste, underpinned by a structured collection of arguments and scientific evidence. The ESC is an integral part of the Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) site Permit to dispose of radioactive waste and demonstrates that it is safe to continue to dispose of low-level waste at the site. The extended operational lifetime of the facility, the continued disposal of waste into future vaults and the subsequent closure and capping of the LLWR, are all dependent upon the acceptance of the ESC by the Environment Agency.
