Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process for the "Daphnia magna Bioaccumulation Project" commenced under the Environment Agency’s purview, managed by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Located in London, this public authority aimed to procure services through an open procedure. The contract, falling under the industry categories of research and environmental services, had a projected value of £190,000 (gross value £228,000) and was scheduled to commence on 1st September 2025, concluding on 31st October 2026. Although initially in the tender stage with an extended submission deadline until 8th August 2025, the procurement was ultimately cancelled on 29th August 2025 due to budgetary constraints.

This tender presented significant growth opportunities for businesses specialising in ecotoxicology and method development, as it sought contractors with expertise in these fields to conduct comprehensive assessments of Daphnia magna. SMEs and VCSEs were especially encouraged to participate, opening possibilities for smaller entities to compete in substantial public contracts. Though the project did not proceed, similar future opportunities could allow companies in environmental research and development to contribute innovatively to regulatory assessments and ecological studies.
