Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process for the "Food Waste Disposal Contract" is conducted by Middlesbrough Council, in collaboration with Hartlepool Borough Council and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council. The procurement falls within the industry category of non-hazardous refuse and waste treatment and disposal services and targets locations across the Tees Valley region in the United Kingdom. As of 5th February 2026, the process has progressed to the award stage, following an open procedure for the tender, initiated due to new food waste legislation effective from 31st March 2025. The contract includes a framework agreement for multiple lots, with the anticipated contract period starting on 31st March 2026, running initially up to 2031, and possible extensions until 2033.

This tender process opens valuable opportunities for SMEs and large companies specialising in waste management services, offering them a stable long-term business through a partnership with local government entities. Businesses capable of handling significant volumes of waste across multiple regions and already experienced in framework agreements will find this opportunity particularly appealing. With a procurement method focused on an open and transparent selection, companies can leverage their expertise in quality service delivery and competitive pricing to secure a position within this framework, thus enhancing their business growth in the public sector landscape.
