Summary of the contracting process

The National Gallery, a central government public authority located in Trafalgar Square, London, has completed a procurement process for the design of a new wing to enhance its gallery space. This architectural project aims to create a distinguished, sustainable public realm, strengthening its connection within London’s arts quarter. The competitive flexible procedure, a selective procurement method, resulted in the successful tenderer being Kengo Kuma & Associates, INC., a large-scale architectural firm. This tender, identified by the OCID ocds-h6vhtk-059759, was initiated on 10th September 2025, and concluded with an award announcement on 7th April 2026. The contract, valued at £8.495 million, is set to commence on 1st May 2026 and run until 31st December 2031.

This tender presents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in architectural design services to contribute to a landmark project within a high-visibility arts quarter. The project’s scope, which includes transforming the space between Trafalgar Square and Leicester Square, offers extensive opportunities for firms experienced in handling large-scale public projects. Notice Title

Design Architect for a New Wing at the National Gallery

Notice Description

Following our 200th anniversary celebrations, we are launching a landmark architectural competition for the design of a transformative new wing and public realm. Our ambition is to create an architecturally distinguished, sustainable, and state-of-the-art new wing and public space. The new wing will be built on the last remaining part of the National Gallery campus: St Vincent House. The property was acquired nearly 30 years ago, for the purpose of expanding gallery space, and currently houses a hotel and office complex. The project aims to invigorate this corner of central London, connecting Trafalgar Square and Leicester Square. Embedding the Gallery as a cornerstone within London's arts quarter, it will also cement our reputation as a leader in the art world and the UK's commitment to culture and heritage. The purpose of this competition is to find exceptional architects to take on the extraordinary responsibility that designing this new wing will entail.
