Summary of the contracting process

The public procurement process initiated by Natural England focuses on the Development of a network of hydrological monitoring across the Long Term Monitoring Network at Finglandrigg, located in north Cumbria. This procurement is currently in the tender stage, offering an open competition method, with a submission deadline of 9 am on 24th November 2025. This contract is valued at £12,500 and falls under the services category, specifically targeting oceanography and hydrology services. It requires the development of a conceptual hydrological model, potentially involving desk-based research or site visits, and is crucial for understanding hydrological influences on ecosystems. The intended contract period spans from 27th November 2025 to 16th March 2026.

This tender represents a significant opportunity for businesses specialised in environmental monitoring, hydrology, and ecological research to enhance their portfolios. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) with a keen interest in environmental sciences and data collection are particularly well-suited to bid for this contract. By participating, companies can gain valuable industry experience, foster collaborations with a central government public authority, and potentially secure a prominent position in the UK environmental monitoring market. The bidding process requires applicants to meet the qualifications detailed in the associated Request for Quotation, ensuring that only competent entities progress to the next stages of procurement.

Notice Information

Notice Title

Development of a network of hydrological monitoring across the Long Term Monitoring Network: Finglandrigg

Notice Description

Natural England's Long Term Monitoring Network (LTMN) started collecting data in 2010, aiming to identify if and how ecosystems are changing and, where relevant, to attribute that change to large-scale ecosystem pressures. Data is collected across 37 sites, most of which are National Nature Reserves. Alongside other data collection, there are approximately 50 permanent vegetation plots and 5 permanent soil plots at each site. Hydrological change is considered to be a potentially significant driver of ecosystem change on all LTMN water -dependent sites, but it is currently poorly understood. This contact requires a conceptual hydrological model to be produced for Finglandrigg NNR, located on the Solway, north Cumbria. This may be done as a desk based exercise using existing information, or through a site visit if appropriate. From this we require advice on suitable locations for a network of dip wells in relation to the permanent vegetation plots are likely to be impacted by hydrological change,
