Summary of the contracting process

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), a central government public authority, is currently in the planning stage for a procurement process concerning the "Incineration of Radioactive Waste". This tender is classified under services related to radioactive and hazardous waste management and is located in Oxfordshire, within the United Kingdom. The procurement process includes a preliminary market engagement phase with a scheduled milestone due on 14th November 2025. This project involves various packaging types for waste and includes handling goods classified as dangerous, requiring specific safety protocols. The estimated contract value is £1.5 million, with gross costs reaching £1.8 million, and it is set to start on 4th February 2026, spanning one year initially, with an option for renewal.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialized in hazardous and radioactive waste management services, particularly those experienced in incineration processes. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with the capability to provide expertise in packaging, sorting, and safe disposal of dangerous goods are well-suited to compete for this contract. The UKAEA is open to innovative solutions and encourages suppliers to propose alternatives that could offer mutual benefits. Engaging in this procurement could lead to business growth through long-term collaboration and potential renewals, expanding both market reach and expertise in a niche yet crucial sector of waste management.

Notice Information

Notice Title

Incineration of Radioactive Waste

Notice Description

UKAEA uses and will continue to use a variety of packaging types for its solid and liquid incinerable waste, including 200ltr steel drums or fibre kegs as well as plastic packages of varying volumes (20l up to 1000L IBCs as appropriate). Where dangerous goods, either class 7 or otherwise require disposal, the organisations qualified and appointed DGSAs (Dangerous Goods Safety Advisors) will review and approve packaging choices. Wastes are currently sorted and segregated in dedicated handling facilities, prior to undergoing the appropriate characterisation techniques based on provenance, including destructive and non-destructive techniques such as sampling for combustion analysis and gamma spectrometry. Soft wastes are compacted in-drum using a low force compactor to help maximise packing efficiency. Whilst this specification outlines current UKAEA practice, the organisation is willing to discuss alternatives or suggestions put forward by suppliers, where there is an opportunity for mutual benefit.
