Summary of the contracting process

Queen's University Belfast has completed the procurement process for a Turnkey Injection Moulding System dedicated to polymer and composite research. The procurement, initiated via an open procedure, is aimed at enhancing QUB's Polymer Micro-Processing Suite, creating a vital capacity for gram-to-kilogram scale injection moulding trials. As a public authority operating under sub-central government and Northern Irish devolved regulations, the university specified the purchase for its Belfast campus, with contracts starting on the 27th of February 2026. The process involved planning and tender stages, culminating in the award of the contract to Arburg Limited, a SME based in Warwick, United Kingdom, for a value of £180,000, offering options for renewal up to 2028.

This contract represents significant growth opportunities, particularly for enterprises specialising in machinery for working hard plastics and rubber or plastics. The emphasis is on fostering innovation and collaboration with Northern Ireland SMEs, underscoring the project's potential to advance research and development within the industry. It suits businesses focusing on technology evolution, integration opportunities, and flexibility in professional services. The procurement fosters engagement with industrial partners and provides hands-on training for students, making it a strategic investment in preparing the next generation of experts while boosting the region's manufacturing prowess.
