Summary of the contracting process

NHS Blood and Transplant is in the planning stage of a procurement process for the supply and maintenance of cryogenic temperature data loggers, aimed at enhancing the Cellular and Molecular Therapies (CMT) function. This initiative focuses on ensuring optimal cell viability during the transportation of cellular products across various laboratories in the United Kingdom, specifically in Barnsley, Birmingham, Filton, Oxford, Liverpool, and Southampton. The procurement process is positioned within the medical equipment industry category, and interested suppliers are requested to express their interest to Carley Butcher at carley.butcher@nhsbt.nhs.uk by 8th May 2026. Suppliers who express interest in this planning stage may attend early market engagement meetings via Microsoft Teams on 1st or 2nd June 2026.

This tender offers substantial opportunity for business growth, particularly for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) specialising in medical equipment and maintenance services. The project, valued at £150,000 (gross amount £180,000), necessitates providers who can ensure strict temperature control during product transit, vital for the CMT's operations. This tender period is anticipated to commence on 1st October 2026 and end on 30th September 2028, with potential extension until November 2030, facilitating long-term partnerships. Engagement in this tender could bolster business credentials for companies adept in advanced cellular and molecular therapies, while fostering innovative solutions within the medical field.

Notice Title

Supply and Maintenance of New and Existing Cryogenic Temperature Data Loggers

Notice Description

The Cellular and Molecular Therapies (CMT) function within NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is responsible for the routine provision of stem cells for transplantation across England. We are also experts in providing development and manufacturing services for Advanced Therapies Medicinal Products (ATMPs). CMT also includes the Clinical Biotechnology Centre, which manufactures GMP-grade DNA plasmids and viral vectors. Our experience in the processing and storage of stem cells for transplant and the manufacture of clinical grade advanced cellular and molecular therapies, combined with our strong links to clinicians and hospitals, means we can help bring new and ground-breaking treatments to the bedside. The organisation intends to initiate a procurement for the supply of new and maintenance of new and existing cryogenic temperature data loggers for dry shippers. CMT receive and issue cellular products nationally in the UK. To maintain optimal cell viability, it is vital that these products remain within strict temperature limits during transit. As such there is a requirement to monitor the internal conditions of all transport containers used to move temperature-controlled products between facilities. Within CMT there are currently six laboratories that are required to issue stem cell products. These are in Barnsley, Birmingham, Filton, Oxford, Liverpool and Southampton.
