Summary of the contracting process

The procurement process involves a contract awarded by the Animal and Plant Health Agency, based in London, for a research project titled "UK Serotine Bat Populations." The project aims to investigate the epidemiology and transmission of European Bat Lyssavirus 1 in the UK, focusing on serotine bats in Southwest England. This procurement falls within the services category and utilises the direct procurement method. The contract was signed on 13th March 2026 and spans from 1st April 2026 to 30th September 2027, with a potential extension of up to three months. Managed by a public authority within central government, the initiative is positioned at the award stage, underpinning research and development activities in the health and environmental science sectors.

This contract offers significant opportunities for businesses specialising in research and development consultancy services, particularly those with expertise in molecular biology and ecology. The absence of competition in the procurement method suggests that highly specialised large institutions, such as universities and research centres, are well-suited for collaborations. With a gross contract value of approximately £137,983.51, businesses adept in wildlife epidemiology and innovative molecular techniques may find this project a valuable avenue for growth and visibility within the UK public sector.

Notice Title

UK Serotine Bat Populations

Notice Description

This contract will enable the delivery of a Defra funded research project 'Investigating the Epidemiology and Transmission of European Bat Lyssavirus 1 in the UK' to further our understanding of the increasing cases of bat rabies due to EBLV-1 in serotine bats in the Southwest of England. Furthering our understanding of host population genetics and host ecology using advanced molecular approaches will uniquely offer clues to understand the emergence, spread and potential maintenance of this fatal zoonotic virus in UK serotine bats. The Authority began the award process with the supplier before the new thresholds came into effect on 1 January 2026.
