Summary of the contracting process

Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust procured insourced symptomatic breast one-stop diagnostic services at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead. The service supports breast cancer pathways through consultant-led breast assessment clinics, diagnostic mammography, ultrasound and biopsy where clinically indicated. It also covers same-day clinical documentation and outcome recording, reporting in line with Trust policies and national standards, integration with existing Trust breast cancer pathways, onward referrals and multidisciplinary team processes. This is specialist medical and healthcare services work intended to provide additional clinic capacity for waiting-list recovery and breast cancer pathway performance. The requirement is delivered on Trust premises and involves operating as an extension of the Trust’s existing clinical pathways, governance arrangements and operational systems.

The procurement has been awarded under the competitive Provider Selection Regime process, using an open procedure. Fourteen bids were evaluated and Your Medical Services Ltd was selected as the preferred provider, with the contract formally awarded on 3 August 2026. The contract is active, was signed on 6 July 2026, and has a value of £98,000 excluding VAT. Services are intended to commence in August 2026 and continue until the required activity is completed or available funding is exhausted. The total duration may not exceed 18 months. Evaluation weighted Quality & Innovation at 40%, Value at 30%, Access & Inequalities at 15%, Integration & Sustainability at 10%, and Social Value at 5%. The selected provider achieved 98.75 out of 100.

This award demonstrates demand from Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust for specialist breast diagnostic capacity that can be integrated directly into an NHS trust environment. A credible competitor would need consultant-led breast assessment capability, diagnostic mammography and ultrasound provision, and the ability to perform breast biopsies where clinically indicated. Strong clinical governance, safe and effective reporting, resilient clinical staffing and reliable workforce capacity are central requirements. Suppliers would also need experience supporting breast one-stop services and integrating with NHS cancer pathways, including documentation, onward referral and multidisciplinary team processes. The evaluation also shows that future competitors should evidence value for money, equitable access and measures that reduce barriers to care, alongside sustainable delivery, pathway performance and wider social value linked to elective recovery and the local community.
