Summary of the contracting process

Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust, part of the NHS Arden and Greater East Midlands Commissioning Support Unit, is planning a procurement process for developing a Specialist Inpatient Peer Support Worker Programme (PSW) within the West Midlands. This initiative falls under services classified as rehabilitation services and follows the Health Care Services (Provider Selection Regime) Regulations 2023, not the Procurement Act 2023. The PSW programme aims to aid the transition of young people aged 13-17 within Tier 4 inpatient mental health services. This planned procurement has a total estimated contract value of £900,000 over a two-year period, with the possibility of a one-year extension, and services are expected to commence in January 2027. Interested providers are encouraged to attend a market engagement event on 30th June 2026 to explore opportunities further, with registration open until 25th June 2026 at noon via the Atamis Health Family portal.

Business growth opportunities abound for organisations experienced in providing trauma-informed, non-clinical mental health peer support services. The procurement is an excellent fit for companies with a strong foundation in delivering person-centred support within inpatient settings, especially for organisations employing staff with lived experience of mental health care. The market engagement event presents a strategic opening for businesses to understand the commissioning process, tailor their services to meet NHS-specific requirements, and form strategic partnerships in providing rehabilitation services to young people in the West Midlands region. Enterprises looking to expand in the public health sector by offering innovative, supportive mental health solutions will find this an opportune moment to introduce effective service models that align with NHS contractual standards.
