Summary of the contracting process

Canterbury City Council is procuring architectural and related services for work delivered in Kent. The requirement is to appoint up to three suitable suppliers to provide architect services to the council. The services are classified as architectural and related services and fall within the services category. The procurement is intended for organisations able to support the council with professional architectural expertise across its requirements. Suppliers will need to work with Canterbury City Council as the public-sector client and deliver services in the Kent area. The opportunity is suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises, making it relevant to architectural practices and consultancy businesses with the resources and professional capability to provide these services.

The process has reached tender: Canterbury City Council invited offers through an open procedure. Expressions of interest and tender documents must be submitted electronically through the Kent Business Portal by 12:00 on 31 July 2026; the recorded enquiry deadline is 12:00 on 12 August 2026. The tender period ends at 12:00 on 12 August 2026, and the award decision is due by 17 August 2026. The contract is scheduled to run from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2029, with an option for two further one-year extensions at the council’s discretion, subject to satisfactory performance. The estimated value is £300,000 excluding VAT, or £360,000 including VAT. Price carries 40% and quality 60%.

This opportunity suits architectural practices and multidisciplinary design consultancies that can provide architect services to a local authority and demonstrate strong service quality. The 60% quality weighting means technical approach, professional delivery and the ability to meet the council’s requirements are more important in evaluation than price alone. Up to three suppliers may be appointed, which may suit firms seeking a place on a small supplier panel rather than a single-provider arrangement. The requirement is explicitly suitable for SMEs, so smaller practices with relevant public-sector or comparable architectural experience can consider competing. Suppliers should be able to operate through the Kent Business Portal and submit tender information electronically in English.
