Summary of the contracting process

Natural England, a central government public authority based in London, is conducting a tender for research and development services related to the "Exposure and Effects of Veterinary Medicines and Pesticides to Aquatic Wildlife in Protected Sites." The procurement stage is currently active, and the process follows an open competition method below the threshold, inviting bids until 17:00 on Friday, 21st August 2026. This project encompasses the collection and analysis of chemical exposure data affecting aquatic wildlife, with the aim of mitigating potential harm. The tender covers services within the UK region, valued at £50,000, with the contract set to commence on 4th September 2026 and conclude on 3rd March 2027.

This tender represents a significant opportunity for businesses specialising in environmental research, chemical analysis, and consultancy services in wildlife protection and environmental management. SMEs are considered suitable, and businesses with expertise in passive quantitative sampling methodology, risk assessment, and chemical mitigation strategies stand to benefit and grow by participating in this contract. By contributing to this project, companies can expand their portfolio within the research and development sector, while helping Natural England and other associated bodies achieve their conservation objectives. Prospective bidders are expected to submit their quotations in accordance with the Request for Quotation (RFQ) guidelines.

How relevant is this notice?

Notice Title

Exposure and Effects of Veterinary Medicines and Pesticides to Aquatic Wildlife in Protected Sites.

Notice Description

Passive quantitative sampling methodology will be employed to allow the full picture of chemical exposure to wildlife to be assessed. Chemical analysis would be selective to chemicals most relevant to remain cost effective. Based on the above analysis, evidence of exposure above the regulatory acceptable concentrations (RAC) for each substance can be used to assess the potential for adverse effects on aquatic species. Furthermore, the additive or synergistic adverse effects of chemical mixtures can be assessed. The evidence of effects from the risk assessment evidence may allow direct management practices to mitigate the adverse effects of these chemicals, either at source, in wastewater treatment works or at the protected site. This work is designed to provide evidence to Natural England, Pharmaceuticals in the Environment Group and DEFRA Biodiversity Pressures Team.
