Summary of the contracting process

The UK Atomic Energy Authority, located at Culham Science Centre in Oxfordshire, is currently in the planning stage of a procurement process titled "ROV Decontamination", under the industry category of Research and Experimental Development Services. This tender aims to develop and test a decontamination solution for remotely operated vehicles used in nuclear storage ponds. The process involves hydro-water washing or similar techniques. The procurement is scheduled to advance with the engagement milestone due on 17th August 2026, and the overall contract period is planned from 1st October 2026 to 31st March 2027. As this tender is under preliminary market engagement, relevant notices have been made available for prospective participants.

This tender presents significant opportunities for businesses specialising in mechanical appliances for cleaning and decontamination, particularly those involved in advanced water pump and spraying technologies. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) alongside voluntary, community, and social enterprises (VCSEs) can potentially benefit from this procurement, given its structure and requirements. Businesses equipped to provide innovative and effective decontamination processes for submerged equipment will find this tender particularly well-suited to their expertise, opening avenues for growth in the niche market of nuclear decontamination services.

Notice Title

ROV Decontamination

Notice Description

RAICo has a requirement to develop and test a solution to decontaminate remotely operated vehicles (ROV) operating in nuclear storage ponds. The decontamination process is required to be performed whilst the ROV is submerged within the pond, and the decontamination process must be performed by remote operation. The objective of the decontamination process is to reduce contamination levels to within the permitted threshold required to bring the ROV out of the pond to perform both preventative and essential maintenance operations. The decontamination process is expected to be achieved by hydro-water washing methods or similar, but the project remains open to all effective decontamination techniques.
