Summary of the contracting process

The UK Atomic Energy Authority is planning to expand and potentially fully upgrade its Auxiliary Field Power Supplies at its Culham Science Centre site in Oxfordshire. The existing installation consists of two modular, single-quadrant Regatron rectifiers in separate cubicles, each built from four Regatron LAB.TC modules. Each sub-module has a 415V, three-phase, 60A input and 32kW output. The requirement is for power-converter goods, potentially involving newer modular supplies and additional capacity. Two technical approaches are under consideration: upgrading to newer modular supplies while expanding from two to four supplies, or adding two different modern supplies and upgrading the system incrementally over a longer period. The authority is engaging the market before finalising the procurement.

This procurement is at the planning stage and is not yet an invitation to tender. The UK Atomic Energy Authority expects to use an open procedure for a goods contract, with one lot and an estimated value of £280,000 excluding VAT, or £336,000 including VAT. The anticipated contract period is 15 January 2027 to 15 July 2027. The authority plans to publish a future notice on 15 October 2026, subject to its planning. It has scheduled preliminary market engagement, including a webinar, with registration expected by 8 September 2026. The engagement is intended to inform the eventual specification and procurement approach. The requirement is above the relevant threshold, and the authority has identified the procurement as suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises.

This planned requirement should suit manufacturers and specialist suppliers of industrial power-conversion equipment, modular rectifiers and high-power electrical supply systems. Relevant firms are likely to need experience designing, supplying, integrating or upgrading modular power supplies in technically controlled environments. Useful preparation would include understanding the performance of Regatron LAB.TC systems, 415V three-phase inputs, 60A operating conditions and 32kW sub-module outputs, together with the challenges of expanding an existing installation without disrupting future upgrade paths. Suppliers able to offer either a complete replacement and expansion to four supplies, or a staged expansion using different modern supplies, should follow the market engagement. Smaller specialist engineering businesses are explicitly considered suitable, including those able to work with larger partners where necessary.
