Summary of the contracting process

NHS Thames Valley Integrated Care Board is procuring a pre- and post-diagnostic support service for adults with suspected or confirmed autism. The service provides person-centred information and support before diagnostic assessment, followed by advice, guidance and signposting after diagnosis. It is intended to help adults understand autism, access appropriate services and develop strategies for their health and wellbeing. The work falls within health and social care support, with the classification describing psychiatrist or psychologist services (CPV 85121270). The commissioning organisation is NHS Thames Valley Integrated Care Board, based in Oxford. Delivery is for the Thames Valley area, covering Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Milton Keynes. The requirement is a single service covering both pre-diagnostic and post-diagnostic support rather than separate lots.

The procurement has reached the award stage: the Commissioner selected Berkshire Autistic Society (Autism Berkshire) through a Provider Selection Regime Direct Award C procedure, without a prior call for competition. The contract was signed on 12 August 2026 and is active. The initial 12-month term is expected to be worth £81,720, with an optional further 12-month extension at the same expected value, giving a stated lifetime value of £163,440. The contract period starts on 1 November 2026. The decision was evaluated against existing-provider performance and likely service quality, weighted at 80%, and price, weighted at 20%. One bid was recorded. The award is subject to the PSR standstill process, with representations due by midnight on 7 September 2026.

This opportunity indicates established NHS demand for specialist autism support spanning the period before and after adult diagnostic assessment. A credible future supplier would need to provide person-centred information, advice, guidance and signposting, and help adults develop practical strategies for health and wellbeing. Evidence of delivering the required service to a satisfactory standard would be important, including reliable safeguarding, quality reporting, information governance, invoicing and compliance with NHS contractual requirements. The selected provider was judged able to meet the service requirements in the Thames Valley region and had demonstrated compliance with service specifications, reporting duties, payment processes and applicable contract conditions. Organisations competing for similar work should therefore be able to show robust operational controls, relevant autism expertise, regional capacity and experience working with NHS commissioners.
