Summary of the contracting process

First Greater Western Limited (GWR) bought specialist hose assemblies, associated fittings and components for maintaining and operating its rolling stock fleet and depot equipment. The requirement covers hoses and components used in rolling stock engineering applications, including component identification, technical support, manufacture or assembly of replacement hoses, and responsive delivery when operational needs arise. The goods are pipe fittings and other fabricated products (CPV 44167000 and 44400000). Delivery covers GWR operations across London, the South East and the South West of England. The requirement is classified as goods and is arranged as one lot. It supports rail fleet maintenance, equipment reliability and continued depot operations.

This procurement is complete and has been awarded by direct award to A.B. Hoses & Fittings Limited, an SME. The award was published on 21 September 2026. Its value is £600,000 excluding VAT and £720,000 including VAT. The contract is scheduled to run from 2 November 2026 to 3 November 2027, with a further 12-month extension available, allowing the arrangement to continue until 3 November 2028. Contract signature was scheduled for 30 October 2026. GWR used a direct award because the supplier’s existing products meet the technical, compatibility and operational requirements of its rolling stock. The agreement is non-exclusive, allowing GWR to use technically compliant alternatives where appropriate.

This award shows demand for specialist rail-maintenance hose supply rather than general industrial hose distribution. A credible competitor would need to provide hose assemblies, compatible fittings and replacement components for existing rolling stock and depot equipment, with the technical knowledge to identify parts and advise on suitable replacements. Manufacturing or assembling hoses to the required specification, supporting engineering assessment and demonstrating product compatibility would be important. Responsive delivery would also matter when fleet or depot operational requirements arise. Suppliers should be able to work within rail engineering approval, testing and compatibility requirements, and show that their products can be introduced without disproportionate technical difficulty, cost or delay. The non-exclusive arrangement indicates that technically compliant alternative sources can remain commercially relevant.

Notice Information

Notice Title

GWR - Hose assemblies, associated fittings and components

Notice Description

GWR procures a range of specialist hose assemblies and associated components to support the maintenance and continued operation of its rolling stock fleet and depot equipment. The requirement includes hose assemblies and associated fittings and components used across a range of rolling stock engineering applications. The supplier may also be required to provide component identification, technical support, manufacture or assembly of replacement hoses and responsive delivery where operational requirements arise.

Procurement Information

The requirement relates to specialist hose assemblies used within GWR's existing rolling stock fleet. AB Hoses currently supplies products that meet the relevant technical, compatibility and operational requirements associated with the existing equipment. For the relevant products, changing supplier or introducing an alternative product may require GWR to establish technical compatibility and undertake additional engineering assessment, testing and approval. Where this is required, a change of supplier could result in disproportionate technical difficulties, additional cost and delay, with potential impacts on fleet maintenance and availability. The agreement will be non-exclusive. GWR will therefore retain the ability to source products from alternative suppliers where suitable technically compliant alternatives are available and where doing so represents an appropriate commercial outcome. The agreement does not guarantee AB Hoses exclusivity over GWR's wider hose requirements. The direct award is therefore intended to provide an appropriate contractual mechanism for the continued supply of existing and compatible products from AB Hoses, while preserving GWR's ability to utilise alternative sources where appropriate.
