Summary of the contracting process

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is planning a managed service for the immunology laboratory at its University Hospitals site in Birmingham. The service covers a range of goods and equipment used by the laboratory, so the requirement combines laboratory supplies and equipment with their managed-service provision. The Trust is working through the Birmingham, Black Country and Solihull Procurement Collaborative on early market engagement to inform a possible future procurement. Suppliers with an interest in supporting hospital immunology laboratories should consider whether their offer can provide and manage the relevant equipment and associated goods. The engagement is intended to explore the requirement with the market before the Trust develops its competitive procurement.

This is at planning stage: the buyer has announced an intention to procure, but has not issued an invitation to tender. It expects a competitive tender after pre-market engagement. Suppliers wishing to take part in the engagement were asked to complete the requirement on the Atamis project page by 7 October 2026; engagement presentations were planned for the week beginning 12 October 2026. A further procurement notice was anticipated by 30 October 2026. The planned contract is to run from 1 July 2027 to 30 June 2030, with a possible extension to 30 June 2032. The contract is above the relevant procurement threshold. The procurement is arranged as one lot.

The engagement is an opportunity for suppliers to help shape the future requirement before the competitive tender is developed. It is likely to suit businesses able to provide a managed service for immunology laboratory goods and equipment in a hospital setting, with the capacity to support the laboratory over a multi-year contract and any extension. Suppliers combining relevant equipment and supply capabilities with ongoing service delivery may be particularly well placed to contribute. The buyer is seeking short presentations addressing points it wishes to explore, so participants should be prepared to explain how their offer could meet the laboratory’s needs and inform the specification. The engagement is preparatory; businesses should use it to understand and influence the emerging requirement, rather than treat it as a tender invitation.
