Summary of the contracting process

United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory Limited commissioned laboratory-scale equipment for research and development on powder capability under its HALEU Deconversion Project, funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The requirement covers four items: a hopper, screwfeeder, vibratory feeder and rotary barrel. The supplier was to design each item to the laboratory’s specification, then manufacture it after the designs were approved. The equipment supports experimental work on deconversion of high-assay low-enriched uranium. The buyer may also require upgrades to support the continuing experimental programme. The procurement is for industrial machinery and associated design and manufacturing work, for delivery in the United Kingdom.

The procurement is complete and a single supplier was appointed: Lyndhurst Precision Engineering Limited, an SME based in Chorley. It was awarded through a below-threshold procedure without competition. The contract was signed on 17 September 2026. Its initial period runs from 21 September to 31 December 2026, with an option to extend by up to 12 months, to 31 December 2027. The contract value is £63,799.40 excluding VAT (£76,559.28 including VAT). It covers design and manufacture of the four laboratory-scale items, with possible equipment upgrades under the extension. The published procurement information does not state an award date or evaluation basis.

This award demonstrates demand from the UK National Nuclear Laboratory for specialist laboratory equipment supporting nuclear research and development, at a relatively small, focused project scale. Suppliers seeking to compete for similar requirements from this buyer would need to show they can design and manufacture bespoke equipment, including material-handling machinery such as hoppers and feeders, and progress designs through buyer approval into production. Work must meet the laboratory’s own site requirements as well as applicable national and international standards. The buyer may also need suppliers able to make equipment upgrades as experimental programmes develop. The selected supplier is an SME, indicating that a smaller engineering business was appointed for this requirement; the procurement was made directly without competition.
