Summary of the contracting process

Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive, trading as Nexus, intends to procure waste management services across eight operational sites. The supplier will collect waste and ensure it is separated into the correct streams, with relevant licences and waste transfer notes. Materials include general and food waste, dry mixed recycling, confidential waste, glass, toner cartridges, electrical goods, copper, scrap metal and steel, batteries, contaminated waste such as oil, fluorescent tubes, vegetation, building materials, inert construction waste, animal and bird carcasses, and occasional office furniture including fridges and freezers. Potential dredged material from the seabed or riverbed may also be included. The services will be delivered at Nexus sites in the Tyne and Wear area, including Benton and South Gosforth.

The procurement is at the planning stage: Nexus has set out its intention to appoint a supplier, but has not issued an invitation to tender. The planned contract is for three years, with a possible one-year extension at Nexus’s discretion. The stated estimated value is £420,983 excluding VAT (£505,180 including VAT). Nexus is conducting preliminary market engagement and expects interested suppliers to provide feedback on the proposed scope, delivery model, supplier capability, indicative costs, risks and market capacity. The buyer’s stated aim is to appoint one supplier for the waste services across its eight sites. The engagement plan includes potential site visits at Benton and South Gosforth, which Nexus expects to hold on 21 October 2026.

This is likely to suit waste management operators able to serve multiple operational sites and manage a broad, varied waste portfolio, including recyclable, confidential, hazardous or contaminated, electrical, construction and organic materials. Suppliers should be prepared to demonstrate that they can collect and route each waste stream appropriately, and hold the relevant licences and provide transfer notes. The range of materials, including possible dredged seabed or riverbed waste and ad hoc furniture, calls for flexible handling capacity and access to appropriate specialist treatment or disposal routes. Nexus is seeking market input on supplier capability, delivery models, indicative costs, risks and available capacity, so providers with experience planning multi-site collections and managing fluctuating or specialist waste streams will be well placed to contribute during the engagement phase and prepare for the later tender. No particular accreditation is stated.
