Summary of the contracting process

United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory Limited (UKNNL) intends to procure a split butterfly valve system for handling and transferring powders, including quick connection and disconnection. The equipment must accommodate a 100 mm connection reducing to either 50 mm or 80 mm, with the 80 mm option intended to reduce the risk of product blockage. It must be compatible with hydrofluoric acid at approximately 25–50% concentration, operate at temperatures up to approximately 300°C, and withstand pressures from full vacuum to approximately 3 barg. Sealing materials must be chemically resistant to hydrofluoric acid at the process concentrations. An integrated vacuum system to clear powder from the valve faces is not required. The buyer is UKNNL, and the delivery location is in the United Kingdom.

This procurement is at the planning stage: UKNNL has set out an intention to buy and is seeking supplier input before issuing an invitation to tender. The buyer expects the contract period to run from 1 December 2026 to 30 April 2027. The planning information describes one lot and marks it as suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises. It gives no procurement procedure, evaluation criteria, or estimated contract value. UKNNL welcomes information from suppliers about available equipment and whether they have supplied similar equipment before. The buyer's stated date for this market-engagement milestone is 23 October 2026; this is an expected date for supplier engagement, not a bid deadline. The engagement is intended to inform the planned procurement rather than invite bids.

This is most relevant to manufacturers, distributors and specialist valve suppliers with products for powder transfer and quick-connect/disconnect operations, particularly those with experience supplying equipment for corrosive chemical service. Suppliers should be able to demonstrate compatibility with hydrofluoric acid at the stated concentrations, including the chemical resistance and suitability of sealing materials. Their equipment should also meet the demanding temperature and pressure envelope and provide one of the specified connection arrangements. Stainless steel and other alternative construction materials may be considered, so suppliers with suitable material options could contribute to the buyer's market assessment. UKNNL specifically asks suppliers to describe what equipment they can provide and whether they have supplied similar equipment before. This is an opportunity to inform the specification and prepare for a later competition, not to submit a tender now.

Notice Title

Split Butterfly Valve for Powder Transfer Applications

Notice Description

UKNNL are seeking expressions of interest from suppliers capable of providing a split butterfly valve system suitable for powder handling and transfer operations. Minimum Technical Requirements * Be suitable for the transfer of powders and quick-connect/disconnect operations. * Accommodate connections in the region of: -100 mm to 50 mm diameter, or -100 mm to 80 mm diameter to minimise the potential for product blockage. * Be compatible with hydrofluoric acid (HF Resistant) at concentrations of approximately 25-50% by mass. * Be suitable for operating temperatures up to approximately 300degC. * Be suitable for operating pressures from full vacuum to approximately 3 barg. Additional Information * An integrated vacuum system for removal of powder from between split butterfly valve faces is not required. * Alternative materials of construction may be considered such as stainless steel. * Particular attention should be given to the suitability and chemical resistance of sealing materials for hydrofluoric acid service. * Sealing materials must be suitable for hydrofluoric acid (HF) at the specified process concentrations.
