Summary of the contracting process

Natural England is commissioning research services to explore how intangible cultural heritage, also called living heritage, can contribute to nature recovery. The work covers a review of published and grey literature on relevant practices and their potential application in nature recovery projects. The contractor will use the findings to draft an annex to existing guidance, using a template supplied by Natural England, for discussion and agreement with partner organisations. The work also includes short case studies showing how these practices are, or could be, used in nature recovery projects, plus photographs suitable for publication with the necessary permissions. The buying organisation is Natural England. Delivery is in the United Kingdom.

Natural England invited quotations through a below-threshold open competition. The contract covers one lot. Quotations were to be submitted by email by 11pm on 12 November 2026; clarification questions were also to be sent by email, with non-commercially sensitive questions and answers circulated to tenderers. The contract period was set from 3 December 2026 to 19 March 2027. The estimated value is £20,833 excluding VAT (£25,000 including VAT). The stated evaluation basis is set out in full in the Request for Quotation. The process reached the tender stage, when the buyer invited offers.

This opportunity suits research providers with the ability to conduct a literature review spanning both published and grey sources, and to interpret living heritage practices in the context of nature recovery. Suppliers should be able to translate research findings into clear guidance material using a supplied template, and to prepare concise, relevant case studies for discussion with partner organisations. The requirement also calls for photography suitable for publication, with the rights and permissions needed for its use. Strong candidates will therefore combine research and analytical skills with practical nature recovery or cultural heritage knowledge, clear writing, case-study development and access to suitable photography. The work is a short, focused assignment involving a review, draft guidance annex, illustrative examples and publication-ready images.
