Penllergare Phase 2 Project Manager: Consultancy Contract / Paid Employee (Negotiable) - circa 2 yearsThe Penllergare Trust, a pioneering independent charitable company established in 2000, is progressing an ambitious landscape restoration scheme at Penllergare Valley Woods, with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund Parks for People programme.Penllergare Valley Woods (100 ha / 259 acres) is a major recreational, heritage and wildlife site; the largest area of green space in north Swansea with over 100,000 people living within a 10 minute drive.The Penllergare Trust has an ambitious vision to see the cultural landscape of Penllergare conserved for public benefit largely supported by local people. With a lease of 100+ years from a private owner the Trust has started to restore the nationally important romantic, picturesque designed landscape created by the Dillwyn Llewelyn family in the nineteenth century. The woods provide a superb location for people to relax, enjoy a range of leisure activities and a place to get outdoors and close up to nature.The Trust is now looking for a highly motivated, versatile and resourceful Project Manager with excellent project management, contract management and environmental skills to deliver our Phase 2 project.The Project will conserve and renovate a walled garden and its environs along with a new visitor centre building for the Trust's 100,000 visitors.This includes the consolidation of the Orchid House, the restoration of the Vinery which will include a full size replica of the internal Orchid House, the repair of the walls and the making safe of other buildings.This centre will have an overall objective of using interactive and multimedia 'displays' to engage visitors with the botanical, scientific, and photographic heritage of Penllergare. The Trust is working with the Heritage Lottery Fund with regard to the entire Phase Two project.The jewel in the crown in heritage terms is the now-ruined orchid house which is a scheduled ancient monument.With regard to the walled gardens in general at Penllergare, Briggs and Ward noted that "Penllergare's kitchen complex is one of the most extensive surviving in Wales outside a major stately home. Its original range of forcing houses must still rate among the most comprehensive ever built in Britain." (RCAHMW, NPRN 265643, 2000)Please see www.penllergare.orgThe RoleYou will be the lead role in procuring and managing contracts and maintain designated funding tightly to budget within the Trusts financial operating controls.A key role is to manage a team of multi-disciplined consultants in preparing all necessary plans, information and. These include but are not limited to; Landscape Architects, Conservation Architects, Activities Plan Developers, Ecologists and Business Consultants.The role offers a great opportunity to work on a range of project types with experienced heritage professionals and to hone your heritage and project management skills in a stimulating and collaborative work environment.The role will coordinate the delivery of the Heritage Lottery Fund Phase 2 programme maximising primary and secondary social, historical, architectural, and culturaldata to deliver a holistic restoration project of the walled garden and environs.The role will reference and coordinate with Trust working groups including Landscape, biodiversity and historic interpretation.The role will liaise closely with the existing Penllergare Trust staff to ensure community engagement and volunteer participation in a wide range of restorative roles incorporating local knowledge, community values and perspectives.The role will carry out continuous assessments of cultural significance - aesthetic, historical, social, architectural to ensure the best value and result is achieved in the project delivery and resulting attraction.The role requires significant experience in policy delivery and management in the following areas - conservation, collections management, urban development, statutory planning, historic restoration and conservation architecture.Monitoring and reporting will be required on a regular basis with associated photographic documentation of the baseline position, development and participationYour tertiary training and experience could be based in any of the heritage or landscape disciplines. You will have several years' relevant work experience, with some preferably in consultancy.The following skills are considered to be essential:* Project management qualifications with experience in the restoration of built heritage* A sound, current knowledge of cultural heritage and an understanding of relevant concepts and methodologies* Ability to understand, describe, analyse and summarise evidence (built, archaeological, landscape, historical, community/social) analysis and critical thinking* Excellent written communication - clear and effective use of English language to communicate complex ideas simply* Excellent financial management skills and proven budgetary control exceeding PS1M* sound computer skills - excellent MS Office package / planning and manipulation* Knowledge of historic gardens / horticulture in both design and implementation.* Ability to converse with a wide range of experts and authorities including CADW and ability to successfully attain required licenses and permissions for the works specified.* Must be able to create, interpret and manage project plans, financial and construction information and ensure health and Safety, planning and construction law compliance in a holistic delivery plan.* An understanding of Cadw's Conservation Principles.* A broad knowledge of historical and traditional building materials and constructional methods and an ability to obtain quickly an up-to-date understanding and appreciation of specialist techniques and 'best practice' methods for maintaining, conserving and repairing historic structures, including the correct and effective use of materials and products.* A knowledge of legislation affecting the heritage environment and of regulations and contract law pertaining to construction work, particularly in the historic environment sector.* Ability to present and communicate concise and cogent arguments and make effective presentations.* Experience of managing and briefing multi-disciplinary professional and technical and craft teams and the delivery of complex projects in sensitive settings.* Have or be prepared to have, if appointed, a minimum of PS5m third party indemnity insurance.'The following skills are desirable but not essential:* Knowledge of heritage planning* Knowledge of architectural history* Report production and presentation skills, graphics/document design (e.g. Adobe suite)* Basic photo manipulation skills* Experience with GIS.* Experience of marketing similar projects to the visitors and stakeholders* Experience and understanding in identification and delivery of social benefit elementsPersonal attributes:* We are looking for someone who can make an immediate contribution to our work To be successful in this role you will:* be a strong team player - helping and collaborating with others to achieve project and team goals* be enthusiastic, motivated and committed to heritage practice* be keen to learn and build your skills* be organised and effective at managing competing demands* appreciate and focus on achieving results have strong communication and interpersonal skills* not be fazed by numbers - for survey analysis* have an ability to learn complex programs like GIS mapping or the Adobe design suite* have a current driver's licence.
