Summary of the contracting process

The NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership is currently engaged in the procurement of "Professional Support Services" under the Open Procedure tender process. This contract is categorised as a service and covers the provision of critical support for medical and dental trainees across Wales, based in Cardiff (postcode CF15 7QZ). The procurement process, which has reached the 'Award' stage, includes a contract valued at £910,850, with a duration of 900 days, recently updated on 1st June 2022. The award was granted to Hammet Street Consultants Ltd, following previous amendments due to increased demand stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

This tender presents valuable opportunities for companies specialising in professional support services, particularly those focused on healthcare and trainee development. Businesses that cater to the needs of medical professionals, such as mental health services, training programmes, or skills development, would be well-positioned to compete in future tenders as NHS Wales seeks to extend the scope of its professional support offerings. The ongoing support for doctors and dentists, and potential expansions to include other medical trainees, indicate a sustained market need for qualified suppliers in this sector.

"rationale": "Need for additional works, services or supplies by the original contractor/concessionaire: Increase demand arose due to COVID-19 (C19) the Contracting Authority (CA) had a requirement to extend contract for 6 months at an additional cost of 240 000 GBP ex VAT. This modification is made under Regulation 72(1)(b), as was necessary to ensure continuation of service due to increased pressure on doctors and dentist in training. Since 2019 the referrals have doubled which is a direct impact of C19. A change of contractor would cause significant inconvenience due to the need of existing complex case work. The modification is to mitigate the continued effects C19 is having on service users; maintaining delivery is critical to avoid a detrimental effect on delivery and impact the health and social care system. The modification does not have the effect of increasing the value of original contract by more than 50%. During the extension the CA will review requirements with a view to award a new contract by Oct-22, with the CA ensuring a seamless handover to any new contractor"
